The pre-budget Economic Survey on Monday sounded an urgent call for reforms in India's agricultural sector, warning that structural issues could impede the nation's overall economic growth.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the survey in Parliament, emphasizing the untapped potential of Indian agriculture.
Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran urged a pan-India dialogue on the sector to address its challenges.
Despite existing government subsidies, significant policy reassessment is necessary to fully leverage agriculture for economic growth and job creation, the survey stated.
Key challenges include balancing growth with food inflation management, improving price discovery, and addressing land fragmentation. The document recommended comprehensive reforms including technological upgrades, enhanced marketing avenues, and innovative farming practices.
