Congress Celebrates 1991 Liberalisation Budget, Calls for New Reforms

In a significant statement, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday emphasized the seminal importance of the Liberalisation Budget of 1991, lauding it as a landmark achievement. Speaking on social media platform X, Kharge noted that July 1991 was a defining moment in India's history, ushering in economic reforms pioneered by then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh.
Kharge articulated that this visionary budget revolutionized India's economic landscape by empowering the middle class and uplifting millions from poverty and marginalization. He asserted, ''The Congress party takes immense pride in this groundbreaking achievement, which catalysed India's growth trajectory and continues to inspire progress and prosperity.''
Further, Kharge pointed out the current urgent need for meaningful and robust second-generation reforms to benefit both the middle class and the impoverished segments of society. Echoing these sentiments, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh noted that today marks 33 years since Manmohan Singh presented the transformative budget. Reflecting on this in a post on X, Ramesh highlighted the New Industrial Policy that was also unveiled the same day, catalyzing India's economic transformation.
