India Advances in 6G Technology with 'Cell-Free' Access Points

The Department of Telecommunications teams up with IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi to develop 'Cell-Free' 6G Access Points, aiming for enhanced connectivity, commercialization, and bridging the digital divide across India.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is intensifying efforts to foster indigenous 6G telecommunications technology. In collaboration with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the agency has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi to develop 'Cell-Free' 6G Access Points.

This ambitious 6G undertaking aims to advance Access Points (APs) for upcoming 6G radio access networks, focusing on standardization, commercialization, intellectual property, and workforce training. The initiative will provide crucial funding and support for domestic companies, startups, academia, and research institutions engaged in the design, development, and commercialization of telecom products.

The scheme, rooted in the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) of the DoT, seeks to make broadband and mobile services more accessible, significantly reducing the digital divide. Unlike traditional cellular networks, 'Cell-Free' Massive MIMO technology deploys multiple APs across large areas to enhance connectivity and increase data speed, providing an unparalleled user experience.
