In a notable stride to strengthen India's agricultural export and import landscape, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has greenlit the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)'s ambitious Rs. 284.19 crore project for developing an 'Export-Import cum Domestic Agricultural Commodity-Based Processing & Storage Facility' on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. This facility, spanning over 67,422 square meters, aims to resolve logistical inefficiencies, minimize multiple handlings, and extend the shelf life of agricultural produce.
The initiative is poised to provide better prices for agricultural goods, generate jobs, and promote overall growth in the agricultural sector. It aims to empower farmers and exporters, stimulate demand, and support rural development. "Under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Ministry for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) is devoted to building robust infrastructure that not only boosts agricultural export capabilities but also supports farmers and rural communities. The development of this all-in-one facility at JNPA will streamline logistics, reduce wastage, and ensure better prices for agricultural products," remarked Sonowal.
This facility is crucial for the export of key commodities like non-basmati rice, maize, spices, onions, and wheat. JNPA, being a leading gateway for frozen meat and marine products, will significantly support exporters from regions distant from Mumbai. The project focuses on enhancing the capabilities of smaller exporters in logistics, container booking, cold chain logistics, and export operations, with projected increases in storage capacities: 1800 metric tonnes for frozen storage, 5800 metric tonnes for cold storage, and 12,000 metric tonnes for dry warehouses.
This project aligns with the government's vision to empower farmers and encourage rural development, creating a model for future infrastructure projects aimed at elevating India's agricultural sector. Notably, JNPA in Maharashtra is the first major port in India operating entirely on the PPP model, and it ranks among the top 100 global container ports.
Additionally, Maharashtra is set to see the development of one of the country's largest ports, the Vadhavan Port, with an investment of Rs. 76,220 crore. This port will serve as an all-weather Greenfield deep draft major port in the Palghar District, capable of handling 23 million TEUs or 254 million tons of annual cargo. It will stand among the world's top 10 largest ports, also serving as a pivotal green fuel hub.
The state has already completed 16 projects worth Rs. 790 crores with Rs. 232 crores of financial assistance from the Sagarmala scheme and has 14 ongoing projects valued at Rs. 1,115 crores, with Rs. 561 crores in assistance from the same scheme.
