EU Suggests India Create Its Own Carbon Tax Mechanism
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the European Union has suggested India develop its own carbon tax system rather than adhering to the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). India is currently in dialogue with the EU to find a solution that benefits Indian industry and citizens.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal revealed on Tuesday that the European Union has recommended India devise its own carbon tax mechanism instead of paying the EU's newly proposed carbon tax.
Goyal noted that the ministry would consider this suggestion to ensure it aligns with the interests of Indian industry and its people. India and the EU are engaged in ongoing talks about the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Goyal expressed concerns that the CBAM could significantly impact the EU's economy, raising costs on infrastructure, consumer products, and industrial goods. The EU's economy might face additional distress, which he termed as his personal interpretation of the CBAM.
A delegation from the EU has proposed that India could implement its own carbon tax and reduce carbon emissions, starting to monitor data from October this year for seven carbon-intensive sectors, including steel and cement. The CBAM is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
