Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday praised the government's initiative of setting up a semiconductor plant in Assam, highlighting its potential impact on employment and technology. The minister underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi's role in approving the project this February.

The semiconductor facility, constructed by Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd in Morigaon, Assam, began its development today. The project promises to generate 15,000 direct jobs and another 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs, with a substantial investment of Rs 27,000 crore. It will manufacture approximately 4.83 crore chips daily.

Vaishnaw noted that the technologies deployed at the plant are developed indigenously, with applications spanning e-vehicles and communication networks. Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, has emphasized that the project focuses on innovative platform technologies like Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP). The initial phase of the project is expected to be operational by mid-2025.
