UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has emphasized the critical need for a peaceful and rights-respecting transition of power in Bangladesh. On Monday, he called for the transition to be transparent, accountable, and inclusive, ensuring that the rights and participation of all Bangladeshi citizens are respected. He also stressed that those responsible for recent violence, which has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, must be held accountable.
Türk underscored the importance of upholding democratic order and the rule of law during this transition. He urged that emergency measures be limited strictly in line with international law and called for the immediate release of individuals arbitrarily detained. Those responsible for human rights violations must be held accountable, and underlying issues and grievances should be addressed.
The High Commissioner reiterated the need for a comprehensive, impartial, and transparent investigation into the alleged human rights abuses that have occurred since July. Initially sparked by peaceful protests against a civil service quota system, the situation has escalated into violence and a severe response from authorities. Türk's Office is ready to support an independent investigation to ensure public confidence and accountability.
“This is a time for national healing,” Türk said. He emphasized the importance of ending violence immediately and ensuring that the rights of victims are upheld through truth and reparations. He also highlighted the need for an inclusive process that unites the country as it moves forward.
Türk’s statements come at a pivotal moment for Bangladesh, where international human rights obligations could guide the transitional authorities and political leaders towards a peaceful and just resolution.
