Impact of Bangladesh's Political Turmoil on Indian Garment Industry
Indian exporters express concerns over potential shifts in garment orders to India due to the political turmoil in Bangladesh. While India aims to grow its exports on merit, temporary shifts are likely. Former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina's resignation amid massive protests has disrupted the business environment.
Indian exporters are closely monitoring the political unrest in Bangladesh as it may result in a short-term shift of garment orders to India. Despite this, India has emphasized that it does not seek to take advantage of the situation in its friendly neighbor.
The crisis intensified after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the country following widespread protests against her government's job reservation policies, which have led to the deaths of over 400 people.
Mithileshwar Thakur, Secretary General of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), expressed concerns, stating, 'We hope the situation stabilizes quickly and normal business can resume.' Other industry voices, including Ludhiana-based exporter S C Ralhan, echoed these concerns, stressing the need for normalized conditions to ensure smooth trade movements and timely payments.
