Mystery Storm Sinks Superyacht: Tech Entrepreneur Among Missing

A storm sank the luxury superyacht Bayesian off Sicily's coast, leaving six people, including British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his daughter, missing. The yacht sunk swiftly, baffling experts. One body has been recovered. Rescue efforts face challenges and low survival chances, with divers battling restricted spaces at the wreck site.

A fierce storm off the coast of Sicily sank the luxury superyacht Bayesian, leaving six individuals unaccounted for, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter. The 56-meter British-flagged vessel, anchored near Porticello, sank within minutes after being hit by the storm early Monday morning, according to witnesses.

Out of the 22 people on board, 15 managed to escape, while one deceased individual has been recovered. However, chances of finding survivors are slim, with divers facing significant challenges. According to Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily, the missing may have been trapped inside the yacht, which lies at a depth of 49 meters.

Rescue operations are hindered by the yacht's confined spaces and limited access points. Marco Tilotta, a fire department diver, reported the yacht appears intact but resting on its side. The cause of the vessel's rapid sinking remains a mystery, with experts baffled given the yacht's design to withstand such conditions. Meteorologists pointed to unusually warm sea temperatures as a factor amplifying the storm's intensity.
