Tragic Train Collision in Egypt's Alexandria Claims Two Lives

A train on Egypt's northern coast crashed into traffic on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring two others, according to a statement from the local governor's office. The crash occurred in Borg el Arab, west of Alexandria, due to a truck being on the tracks when they were meant to be closed for a passenger train transit.

The train from El-Dabaa was derailed by the collision. Train derailments and crashes are frequent in Egypt, where an aging railway system has suffered from mismanagement. Recently, the government has announced efforts to improve its railways.

In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi stated that approximately 250 billion Egyptian pounds, or $8.13 billion, were necessary to overhaul the neglected rail network. In prior incidents, train collisions and derailments have resulted in significant fatalities, with the deadliest crash occurring in 2002, taking over 300 lives.
