A recent study conducted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), operating under the Railway Ministry, has uncovered multiple challenges facing train controllers in their roles. The study highlights issues ranging from unattractive pay scales to immense stress caused by vacancies, leading to health concerns and a lack of basic amenities.

The findings, which were recently presented to the Railway Board, detail that section controllers perform highly demanding jobs exacerbated by a 15-20% vacancy rate. Additionally, officers medically decategorized are posted within the department, compounding the issues. The report underscores the lack of appropriate rewards, both financially and in terms of career growth, for these vital roles.

Titled 'The challenges faced by Section Controllers in carrying out their duties effectively,' the report suggests improvements in selection procedures, training, and infrastructure to boost operational efficiency. Recommendations include upgrading the pay scale, introducing aptitude tests, reintroducing direct recruitment, and increasing the frequency of refresher courses. Moreover, regular health check-ups and wellness programs like yoga and meditation are suggested to address the adverse health impacts on controllers.
