State-owned Coal India Ltd, the dominant player in the domestic coal output arena, saw its contribution to the government's exchequer rise by 2.06 per cent to Rs 20,071.96 crore in the April-July period of the current fiscal year, a notable increase from Rs 19,666.04 crore during the same period last year, according to provisional coal ministry figures.
In July alone, total levies paid surged to Rs 4,992.48 crore from last year's Rs 4,789.42 crore. These contributions, which include royalties, GST, and cess on coal, provide substantial revenue for both central and state governments. Jharkhand received the highest share amounting to Rs 4,417.12 crore, followed by Odisha at Rs 4,319.67 crore, Chhattisgarh at Rs 3,950.41 crore, Madhya Pradesh at Rs 3,526.27 crore, and Maharashtra at Rs 2,086.35 crore.
State governments benefit from a 14 per cent royalty on coal sales, a 30 per cent contribution towards district mineral foundations, and a 2 per cent share from the National Mineral Exploration Trust. Captive and commercial mines also contribute to this revenue through auction-based revenue sharing. These levies aid not just in financial terms but also through employment generation, land compensation, and infrastructural investments like railways and roads.
