The Indian government's Production-linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are making significant strides in the pharma and meditech sectors, with 50 operational greenfield plants and 50 more planned over the next two years.
Speaking at the Annual Pharma Summit organized by Assocham, Department of Pharmaceuticals Secretary Arunish Chawla highlighted the success of the PLI schemes and their impact on exports. ‘The PLI schemes in the pharma and meditech sectors have been a roaring success,’ Chawla stated.
The initiatives have led to a remarkable $10 billion in exports over the past two years, dispelling the myth of India’s dependency on bulk drug imports. The meditech industry has similarly seen double-digit growth in exports. These sectors are now the fourth-largest manufacturing export from India, behind automotive, petrochemicals, and electronics.
