A tragedy has struck the Mediterranean, as a boat carrying Egyptian migrants capsized near the eastern Libyan town of Tobruk. According to two Egyptian security sources, one man was rescued, but twelve others are feared dead.
The ill-fated journey began on Sunday night from Egypt's al-Sharkia and al-Gharbia provinces, with the migrants aiming to reach Italy, said the sources. They were reportedly using a people smugglers' boat, a common yet perilous option for many Egyptians seeking better opportunities in Europe amid rampant inflation and unemployment at home.
Libya continues to serve as a critical transit point for those fleeing poverty and conflict, exacerbated by its unstable post-Gaddafi era. The latest U.N. data from mid-2024 indicates that Libya hosts 761,322 migrants from 44 different nationalities.
