In a move to enhance connectivity, India's Civil Aviation Ministry is exploring the use of seaplanes, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an integrated nation. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced plans to connect remote parts of India, especially the Northeast, during an aviation conference.
At a seaplane demonstration on Umiam Lake, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and other officials joined Naidu, who stressed that improved connectivity will benefit tourism, spirituality, and business in the region. Drawing inspiration from the Maldives, where seaplanes thrive, Naidu sees potential for a tourism surge in Meghalaya.
Naidu urged local manufacturers like HAL and Mahindra Aerospace to partner with foreign counterparts to build seaplanes domestically. Additionally, he announced the inclusion of seaplanes in India's UDAN scheme, aiming to exploit the vast coastline, islands, and inland water bodies. Meanwhile, CM Sangma noted Shillong's growth as a tourist hub, surpassing Baku as a top destination.
