India's Leap into the Sky: Advanced Air Mobility Sandboxes Identified

The Indian government is exploring potential sandbox sites in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh for the deployment of advanced air mobility solutions, like eVTOL aircraft, to alleviate urban congestion. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is creating a regulatory framework to facilitate these modern air travel systems.

The Indian government is making strides toward implementing advanced air mobility solutions by identifying potential sandbox sites in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. This move aims to address urban congestion through innovative technologies like eVTOLs, or electric Vertical Take Off Landing aircraft.

In a recent announcement, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, highlighted that the civil aviation ministry seeks to establish a regulatory sandbox for these technologies. A delegation including ministry officers, the DGCA, and industry stakeholders has explored possible sites such as Mandvi airstrip in Kutch, and Sabarmati River Front in Gujarat, as well as Kurnool and Puttaparthi airports in Andhra Pradesh.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has already issued guidance materials essential for the design, operation, and authorization of vertiports, alongside the type certification of these aircraft. Efforts are underway to integrate Unmanned Aircraft Traffic Management with existing systems to optimize the flow of air traffic, thereby enhancing the strategic and tactical management of advanced air mobility operations.
