Push for Indian Standards: Securing Quality Through QCOs

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Kare emphasized the importance of Indian Standards and Quality Control Orders (QCOs) at an inter-ministerial meeting. The implementation of QCOs aims to uplift domestic quality ecosystems and curb sub-standard imports, thus providing a level playing field for MSMEs. Representatives from multiple Union Ministries participated in the discussions.

During a crucial meeting on Thursday, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Kare stressed the urgent need for prioritizing Indian Standards across all ministries. Chairing an inter-ministerial discussion, Kare highlighted the significance of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) in establishing a robust quality ecosystem that aligns with the objectives of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat.'

The meeting brought together representatives from 17 Union Ministries, underlining the collaborative focus on improving product standards. Discussions emphasized the pivotal role of QCOs in mandating compliance with standards for various products, thereby enhancing public health safety and boosting industry competitiveness, particularly for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), tasked with setting and certifying standards, was also spotlighted for its role. A detailed review of 628 products under consideration for QCOs was conducted, leading to an agreement on expediting timelines for implementation to reinforce India's commitment to quality and self-reliance.
