The Indian aviation industry is bracing for significant financial headwinds, as a report by ICRA forecasts net losses of Rs 2,000-3,000 crore in FY25 and FY26. This downturn follows a net profit of approximately Rs 1,600 crore in FY24, underscoring the volatile landscape of the sector.
Key factors contributing to the anticipated losses include intense pressure on ticket pricing as airlines strive to sustain healthy passenger load factors (PLF) amidst soaring aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. Additionally, the high fixed costs inherent in the industry are expected to hinder rapid earnings recovery.
ICRA's report further cites rising borrowing costs as a significant challenge, compounded by the lease liabilities from scheduled aircraft deliveries, adding to the financial burden. Despite these challenges, the projected losses are notably lower than the Rs 23,500 crore and Rs 17,400 crore losses reported in FY22 and FY23, respectively.
The industry's debt levels are anticipated to remain stable, with an interest coverage ratio of 1.5-2.0 times in FY25, indicating a manageable debt position. Positive indicators include robust domestic air passenger traffic, which soared by approximately 14.5% year-on-year as of January 2025 and exceeded pre-Covid levels by 17.9%, highlighting sustained demand for air travel.
While the sector confronts short-term profitability challenges, increased air travel demand and prudent financial strategies may offer a pathway to enhanced performance in years to come.
