India Powers Ahead in AI Governance and Innovation

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Saturday that India is at the forefront of not just adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) but also in shaping its governance. At the 6th convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Kottayam, Sitharaman informed attendees, "We're leading in AI adoption and actively shaping its governance, emphasizing its importance."
Sitharaman underscored Prime Minister Modi's participation in the AI Action Summit in Paris, co-chaired by India, as a testament to the nation's commitment to responsible AI usage. She reinforced the notion that AI must be ethical, inclusive, and trustworthy to mitigate societal fears regarding unethical practices.
The Minister further elaborated on India's strategic approach to AI, focusing not only on research but on large-scale implementation. She cited Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella's remark dubbing India the 'use case capital' for AI. She also touched upon India's technological achievements, including 3 billion AI-related app downloads and significant progress in the Global Innovation Index.
