The Prayagraj airport, normally accustomed to moderate traffic, is witnessing an extraordinary surge in flights and passenger numbers during the Maha Kumbh. The airport handles 40 non-scheduled charters daily, with peaks of up to 70 during weekends, alongside 148 scheduled flights, a sevenfold increase over non-Kumbh periods.
On February 21, a record 24,512 passengers utilized the airport, with 236 flights operating that day. Notable figures, including political and corporate leaders, have used the airport, testifying to its enhanced role in facilitating access to the religious event, especially through chartered services.
Operated jointly by the Indian Air Force and the Airports Authority of India, the airport has undergone upgrades, including night landing facilities. Despite the current high traffic, plans are underway to integrate Prayagraj with other regional airports, cementing its place in a spiritual tourism corridor and signaling a shift in travel paradigms among the youth.
