Airtel has signed a landmark agreement with Elon Musk's SpaceX to introduce Starlink's high-speed internet services to customers across India, as revealed in a stock exchange filing on Tuesday. This collaboration is aimed to deliver essential services to remote areas in India where traditional telecom services prove too costly.
The deal marks the first of its kind in India, contingent upon SpaceX securing necessary clearances for selling Starlink in the country. The partnership will enable Airtel and SpaceX to explore avenues of mutual benefit—leveraging Airtel's vast market expertise with SpaceX's technology to enhance connectivity for consumers and businesses alike.
Airtel is poised to offer Starlink equipment through its retail stores and extend Starlink services to business clients, connection opportunities for communities, schools, and health centers, particularly in rural areas. Strategic plans include using Starlink to enhance Airtel's network and utilizing Airtel's infrastructure to support SpaceX's endeavors.
By integrating Starlink, alongside its collaboration with Eutelsat OneWeb, Airtel aims to amplify nationwide connectivity and reach under-covered regions. The enterprise suite from Starlink is expected to enable Airtel to provide comprehensive and seamless connectivity solutions to enterprises, businesses, and communities.
Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel Ltd., stated, "Collaborating with SpaceX to provide Starlink services in India underlines our dedication to cutting-edge satellite connectivity. This alliance will help us extend top-tier high-speed broadband to even India's remotest corners, offering reliable internet to all."
Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting, "We are thrilled to work with Airtel to unlock Starlink's transformative potential for India. Airtel has been pivotal in India's telecom landscape, and our collaboration complements our direct consumer offerings."
With a presence in 15 countries across India and Africa, Airtel is a global communications giant. Starlink utilizes low Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet globally, broadening its footprint through pioneering alliances like the one with Airtel.
