In a landmark diplomatic move, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will visit India from March 16 to 20, signaling a shift in foreign policy priorities. Opting to visit India ahead of China signifies New Zealand's intent to bolster relations with India, despite China's status as a major trading partner.

Speaking on this development, former New Zealand Consul and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awardee Bhav Dhillon described Luxon's decision as strategically significant. He noted that with India as the world's fifth-largest economy, the potential for trade and growth is substantial. "It's notable that New Zealand is emphasizing its relationship with India despite China being a much larger trading partner," he said.

Luxon's agenda focuses on enhancing trade and business opportunities and positioning New Zealand as an investment hub. Dhillon emphasized mutual benefits, expressing hope for strengthened diplomatic and economic ties. The growing number of Indian students in New Zealand further highlights potential avenues for collaboration in education and tourism sectors.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India confirmed Luxon's visit, scheduled at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Luxon will address the opening of the 10th Raisina Dialogue 2025, engage with Indian business leaders, and promote investment during his stay.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Luxon aims to expand trade and investment links, framing the visit as an opportunity for India to increase its regional influence. Luxon remarked, "Trade is crucial to economic growth, reducing living costs, and generating employment and higher incomes for all New Zealanders." His visit is seen as opening doors for Indian engagements in New Zealand, fostering a promising bilateral partnership.
