A tragic ferry accident near the Indonesian island of Bali resulted in four deaths and 38 individuals unaccounted for, according to the country's Search and Rescue agency announced on Thursday.

The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, carrying 65 people, sank shortly after departing from Banyuwangi port in East Java. The vessel included 53 passengers and 12 crew members, along with 22 vehicles, the agency reported.

Despite efforts to locate those missing, the search is hindered by adverse weather conditions. Passenger details remain undisclosed, though reports suggest no foreign nationals were involved. Ferry travel is widespread in Indonesia, but safety concerns persist due to lax regulations allowing vessel overloading.
