India does not require a government-backed venture capital fund to bolster its defence sector, stated Rajesh Kumar Singh, India's Defence Secretary. Speaking at the inaugural National Security Summit organized by ANI, Singh highlighted that assured government orders and expedited contract approvals are sufficient to entice private investment in defence manufacturing.
Singh noted that the sector's growth is propelled by timely orders and efficient procurement processes rather than government-led venture capital initiatives. He pointed out, "The funding for a defence startup or MSME hinges on its order book. If orders are placed, securing funds won't be an issue."
While not entirely dismissing a sovereign venture capital fund for defence, Singh indicated it might play a supplementary role. However, he stressed that the current robust venture capital ecosystem adequately supports startups with promising technologies. Singh emphasized the government's role in fully utilizing the defence budget, expediting domestic contracts, and identifying potential firms within the country.
