A tragic incident unfolded as an Antonov An-22 military transport aircraft crashed in Russia's central Ivanovo Region during its first flight following repairs. The aircraft had seven people on board, according to the Russian defence ministry.
The ministry confirmed that the An-22 crashed in an unpopulated area, with a search and rescue team dispatched to ascertain the crew's fate. TASS news agency reported finding fragments of the aircraft on both the shore and in nearby waters.
The An-22, a heavyweight in the aviation sector, is known for its impressive capabilities, including a maximum takeoff weight of 225 tonnes and a payload capacity of 60 tonnes. Frequently used by the Russian Aerospace Forces, it can transport heavy weapons and fly distances exceeding 5,000 kilometers.
