India has successfully finalized a trade agreement with the United States, eliminating prior uncertainties and creating lucrative investment opportunities between the two largest democracies. Anuradha Thakur, Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, confirmed this development at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Conference on the Union Budget 2026-27 in New Delhi.
While clarity is awaited concerning whether India will open its market to U.S. agricultural products, Thakur emphasizes the country's robust economic resilience amid global instability. She indicates that although the economic uplift from the trade deal is yet to be quantified, it wasn't accounted for in initial growth projections of 6.8% to 7.2%.
India's government reaffirms its commitment to fiscal discipline in the newly presented Union Budget, prioritizing manufacturing, infrastructure, and tech-driven growth. Highlighting stable macroeconomic indicators and declining debt-to-GDP ratios, Thakur praises the infrastructure and financial initiatives designed to bolster economic development. Key priorities include upgrading industrial clusters and supporting sectors like biopharma, textiles, and chemicals, while stressing communication between industry and government to advance India's growth strategy.
