Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the decision to halt three railway projects in the Union Territory, citing concerns over land disruption and limited demand. Instead, he urged an increase in the frequency and size of Vande Bharat trains operating between Katra and Srinagar.

The projects, intended to connect Srinagar with Pahalgam and Shopian, have been temporarily shelved following feedback from local representatives and residents. Abdullah's discussions with the Railway Ministry emphasized the potential impact on productive orchards and tourism.

He also highlighted the pressing need to enhance train services, stating that the current booking situation of Vande Bharat trains is not viable, especially with only eight coaches available. Abdullah suggests an increase to at least 12 coaches to meet demand and provide a reliable alternative when roads or flights are inaccessible.
