BNP Paribas has secured an additional €250 million guarantee from the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group, provided through the European Investment Fund (EIF) under the InvestEU Programme. The financing will support the bank’s efforts to expand funding for innovative and sustainable businesses across the European Union.

The guarantee strengthens BNP Paribas’ role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-sized companies, particularly those contributing to Europe’s green and digital transition.

Expanding Financing for SMEs and Innovation

The EIB Group highlighted that guarantee mechanisms are an important tool for improving access to finance for businesses undertaking innovative or higher-risk projects.

“In 2025, the EIB Group signed through the EIF close to €5 billion in guarantees across Europe, contributing to increased financing for small and medium-sized businesses,” said Ambroise Fayolle, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank.

“Guarantees allow banks to expand financing to the real economy and support more risky projects, which in turn drive innovation.”

According to Fayolle, the additional €250 million guarantee for BNP Paribas will increase financing opportunities for companies working on green and digital transformation initiatives.

Supporting Growth and Sustainability

BNP Paribas said the agreement reflects its commitment to supporting economic development, innovation, and sustainability across Europe.

“We are proud to partner with the EIF to support the European economy and drive innovation and sustainability,” said Christopher Kramme, Head of BNP Paribas Growth Solutions.

“This guarantee is a recognition of our commitment to make a positive impact on the region’s growth and development.”

Three Investment Portfolios

The €250 million guarantee will be allocated across three specialized investment portfolios, with funds deployed over a two-year period.

Innovation and Digitalisation Portfolio

This portfolio will support innovative SMEs and small mid-cap companies, improving their access to financing and accelerating the adoption of digital technologies and digital transformation projects.

Sustainability Climate Change Mitigation Portfolio

Funding will support investments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including projects related to:

  • Renewable energy solutions

  • Energy-efficient commercial buildings

  • Industrial energy efficiency improvements

  • Low-emission mobility technologies

  • Green information and communication technologies

Sustainability SMEs and Small Mid-Caps Portfolio

This portfolio will support SMEs and mid-cap companies driving sustainable economic transformation, helping businesses adopt environmentally responsible technologies and practices.

Supporting Early-Stage Investments

Through the partnership with the EIF, BNP Paribas will be able to finance earlier-stage projects that may carry higher risks but also significant innovation potential.

Despite the increased capacity to support emerging projects, the bank said it will continue applying its standard credit policies, due diligence processes, and risk management practices.

Leveraging Advanced Data and Technology

BNP Paribas also highlighted its use of a proprietary data and technology platform, designed to track business models and sustainability goals in real time.

The platform provides advanced analytics that help monitor investments and ensure they align with the bank’s sustainability and growth objectives.

Strengthening Europe’s Innovation Ecosystem

The collaboration between BNP Paribas and the EIF is expected to strengthen Europe’s innovation ecosystem and support companies transitioning toward digital and sustainable business models.

BNP Paribas currently has a strong presence across the region, with:

  • 200 bankers dedicated to innovative companies in Europe

  • More than 5,200 start-up and scale-up clients

The new financing guarantee will allow the bank to expand its investment activity and support additional projects, contributing to economic growth and the development of innovative and sustainable businesses across Europe.
