On Wednesday, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly took a significant step in environmental policy by unanimously passing an amendment bill aimed at curbing air pollution caused by older vehicles. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik underscored the bill's intent to balance ecological protection with industrial growth and fiscal responsibility.

The Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introduces increased environmental taxes on small and large vehicles. For instance, taxes on two-wheelers and petrol-powered light motor vehicles have doubled. The state anticipates generating an additional annual revenue of Rs 160 crore, allocated for road safety and modern infrastructure projects.

Highlighting sustainability, the bill encourages the adoption of BS-VI vehicle standards and the growth of electric vehicles. It also offers industrial relief by capping taxes on crane vehicles. Overall, the initiative is a stride towards comprehensive environmental stewardship and economic enhancement, representing a collaborative legislative effort.
