In a statement delivered to the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the government announced that 10,000 air-conditioned e-buses will be allocated to 116 cities in 26 states and UTs by the end of 2027, under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. A subsequent scheme will aim to introduce an additional 35,000 e-buses.

The scheme, initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 16, 2023, targets improved mobility and reduced pollution in smaller cities. Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, acknowledged the financial challenges faced by states, explaining the scheme's population-based criteria for bus allocation.

While 6,500 bus agreements have been finalized, delays in Bihar highlight coordination challenges. The new scheme aims to further expand these benefits while also introducing innovations like the Sahaj ticket and a national common mobility card, enhancing the travel experience for users across multiple transport modes.
