Kolkata Metro Rail Enhancements: Paving the Way for Improved Service
Kolkata Metro Railway has approved works worth Rs 671.72 crore to enhance capacity on the North-South Corridor. The plan includes setting up new traction substations and upgrading existing systems to accommodate increased passenger demand, ensuring reliable power supply and improved train frequency.

The enhancement of Kolkata Metro Railway capacity has been set in motion with a significant investment of Rs 671.72 crore. An official statement revealed that the North-South Corridor will see substantial improvements, including the establishment of seven new traction substations at a cost of Rs 291.06 crore.
This move includes the augmentation and upgrading of auxiliary and traction substation systems from Esplanade Metro to Kavi Subhash in the North-South corridor. To further boost power supply, the section from Netaji Metro Station to Kavi Subhash Metro Station will see a technology upgrade from the existing 11 KV system to a more robust 33 KV system, costing Rs 380.66 crore.
The Metro Railway Kolkata, originally designed in the 1980s, is striving to meet the rising demands of increased passenger volume. The approved upgradations target reliable power supply, supporting a higher frequency of train operations and overall enhanced passenger service, as per the official release.
