Tesla's Autonomous Ambitions Face Hurdles in Europe
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is confident in acquiring EU approval for the carmaker's 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) technology. However, emails from EU regulators display skepticism, noting concerns over the technology's safety and functionality. European approval is crucial for Tesla as it seeks to regain market share.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is banking on the European Union green-lighting the company's 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) system. Yet, internal communications from European regulators expose significant doubts about the tech's touted safety benefits.
The Dutch road regulator RDW granted initial approval in April, directing the discussion to an EU committee meeting. However, regulators from several nations like the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland have flagged safety issues, such as speeding and usage on icy roads.
Ahead of the committee hearings, Tesla enthusiasts pressured regulators, with Musk urging customers to advocate for the approval at Tesla's shareholder meeting. Tesla, striving to expand its European market, anticipates an EU-wide approval to boost sales and fend off competition.
