Revolutionizing Highways: India's Barrier-Free Toll Collection System
India is set to introduce a barrier-less toll collection system nationwide, aiming to streamline highway traffic, save Rs 6,000 crore annually, and improve the driving experience. The new system, employing AI-enabled technology, eliminates toll plaza stops, enhances efficiency, and reduces emissions.
India is embracing a new era of highway travel with the nationwide implementation of a barrier-less toll collection system. This initiative promises not only a seamless driving experience for commuters but also significant financial benefits for the government. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the system's potential to save Rs 6,000 crore annually by minimizing operational costs.
Launched at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza in Delhi, following the initial roll-out at Choryasi in Gujarat, this system utilizes cutting-edge technology, including AI-enabled cameras that read vehicle details at speeds up to 100 km/h. This advancement marks a shift from the traditional toll collection methods to a more efficient, fast-paced system.
Besides the economic savings, the new system is expected to contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. The National Highways Authority of India plans to expand this system across multiple states by 2026, further enhancing India's infrastructure.
