The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has voiced concerns over a reported surge in fertiliser prices, accusing both the Centre and state governments of failing to address issues of black marketing and hoarding. The farmers' organization warns that this situation could drastically impact crop yields, exacerbating rural distress and leading to food inflation.
AIKS claims that the prices of key fertilisers like Muriate of Potash have increased significantly in agrarian regions of Kerala. Such hikes are attributed to shipping disruptions from West Asia, with increased global input costs being transferred to Indian farmers. The organisation also blames large traders and private dealers for exploiting the situation through hoarding and illegal pricing.
Additionally, AIKS criticizes the government for reductions in fertiliser subsidies and links the crisis to broader policy failures, including India's foreign policy shifts. The organization alleges that these issues reflect underlying structural problems stemming from privatisation trends in the fertilizer sector.
