Maharashtra's Onion Crisis: Farmers Demand Fair Compensation

Rohit Pawar and fellow NCP (SP) members join onion farmers in a protest, demanding that the government buy onions at Rs 25/kg and provide compensations for distress sales. Onion prices have plummeted due to export disruptions, causing substantial losses for farmers who end up selling below production costs.

Maharashtra's ongoing onion crisis has sparked significant political activity as NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar has demanded government intervention to support struggling farmers. On Monday, Pawar, alongside NCP MPs Nilesh Lanke and Bhaskar Bhagare, led a tractor rally and sit-in protest at Lasalgaon APMC in Nashik.

The protest was a response to the drastic drop in onion prices due to disruptions in exports, particularly affecting markets reliant on West Asia. Pawar called for the government to procure onions at Rs 25 per kg, far above the current rate of Rs 12.35 per kg announced by the Union Agriculture Minister.

Pawar highlighted the farmers' plight, stating they are unable to recover production costs, leading to personal financial burdens. He urged the immediate implementation of a subsidy for those who sold onions at rock-bottom prices and warned that failure to meet their demands would escalate the protest further.
