A chemical tank imploded at Nippon Dynawave Packaging in Washington, killing one and injuring nine. An estimated 900,000 gallons of ‘white liquor’ were inside. Recovery efforts continue, with the facility deemed stable despite earlier concerns. Governor Ferguson expressed condolences, while Japanese employees were reportedly unharmed.
A devastating incident unfolded at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Washington after a chemical tank imploded, leading to the death of one person and injuries to nine others, as confirmed by authorities.
The rupture involved a tank containing white liquor, a sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide solution used in paper production. Initially estimated at 80,000 gallons, the tank actually held closer to 900,000 gallons. Recovery operations are set to resume in Longview, Washington, as officials confirm the structure's instability.
While no threat to the surrounding population has been declared, Governor Bob Ferguson extended his sympathies to those affected. A separate industrial concern in California, involving a tank with methyl methacrylate, saw mounting pressure relieved without explosion.
