In 2025, CEO compensation packages in the United States saw a nearly 6% increase, bringing the median to USD 17.7 million. This rise reflects company boards’ strategies to retain executives who can drive profitability and stock market performance, offering substantial incentives to encourage continued success.

The median employee salary at S&P 500 firms reached USD 89,744, experiencing a 4.7% year-over-year rise. Despite outpacing inflation, many workers felt the strain, struggling with increased living costs. Disclosures highlight vast pay disparities; at Coca-Cola and TJX, CEOs earned 1,739 and 1,774 times more than median workers, respectively.

The AP's compensation survey reveals these gaps, emphasizing the need for performance-linked equity incentives. Notably, Shankh Mitra of Welltower claimed the second-largest pay package at USD 821.1 million. Meanwhile, Sarah Anderson from the Institute for Policy Studies pointed to tax initiatives in cities like San Francisco aimed at rebalancing these disparities.
