India is on the cusp of becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, specifically in multilingual and multimodal AI solutions, according to Sashikumar Sreedharan, Managing Director of Google Cloud India. Speaking at the Leaders Connect India 2026 event, Sreedharan highlighted India's significant advantages in the global AI arena, given its linguistic diversity and rapidly advancing digital landscape.
Sreedharan pointed out a major shift in AI adoption in India, moving from experimental phases towards achieving tangible business outcomes. He noted that AI is increasingly seen not just as a technological advancement but as a key driver of business value, emphasizing cost reduction and new revenue possibilities. This transformation is largely led by sectors such as Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI), which are pioneering AI-driven customer care and operational processes.
Discussing future trends, Sreedharan identified 'agentic AI' as the upcoming phase, enabling autonomous, multi-step processes in industries. He also addressed data security concerns, advocating for the use of AI without relocating sensitive information. Additionally, he emphasized the vital role of modern, trusted data systems and robust cloud infrastructure in realizing India's AI ambitions. Traditional companies are now racing to imbibe AI agility akin to startups, focusing efforts on dedicated AI teams and innovation layers.
