Labour's Alternative Vision for New Zealand's Economic Future

Shadow finance minister Barbara Edmonds of New Zealand has voiced her support for returning the government’s finances to a surplus, while criticizing the budget under the current administration. She emphasized that Labour would make different choices to alleviate the burden on those struggling with rising costs.

Edmonds expressed that Labour’s approach would include reversing policies such as changes to interest deductibility and the bright-line test for property, and using the garnered revenue to provide more cost-of-living relief. She noted the current budget's inadequacy in addressing pertinent issues like access to capital and productivity.

The centre-right government's latest budget, released ahead of a competitive election, promises a surplus by 2029/30, though Edmonds questioned its optimism, especially concerning forecasts on tax revenue and falling petrol prices.
