India's industrial sector witnessed mixed outcomes in April 2026, as highlighted in a recent report by the Bank of Baroda. While overall industrial production recorded a modest growth of 4.9%, the capital goods segment emerged as the frontrunner, with an impressive 16% increase based on the revised Index of Industrial Production (IIP) series.

This performance by capital goods significantly overshadowed the broader industrial landscape, where other sectors, including mining, manufacturing, electricity, and water supply, registered a marked slowdown. The report noted that while capital goods continued their double-digit growth, other use-based classifications such as infrastructure and construction showed moderate increases.

Despite the upbeat figures from capital goods, the report warned of looming challenges. Global economic uncertainties, notably supply-chain disruptions and elevated energy costs, pose risks to continued industrial momentum. However, these obstacles are predicted to be temporary and are under close observation, with the revised IIP providing a broader assessment by including additional categories like water supply and waste management.
