The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $500,000 grant to support recovery efforts in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) following the devastating impact of Typhoon Sinlaku earlier this year. The powerful storm struck the island nation between 9 and 12 April, leaving a trail of destruction across parts of Chuuk and Yap states. The funding is intended to help the government respond to urgent humanitarian needs while supporting affected communities as they begin rebuilding their lives. ADB officials expressed sympathy for the people of Micronesia who lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods during the disaster.

Thousands Affected by Severe Storm Damage

Typhoon Sinlaku impacted around 34,000 people living across 42 municipalities in Chuuk and Yap. Strong winds, heavy rain and coastal storm surges caused widespread destruction, damaging infrastructure and disrupting daily life for thousands of families. At least nine people lost their lives during the disaster, while approximately 7,000 homes were destroyed or severely damaged. Many residents were left without safe shelter and faced immediate challenges accessing basic services and essential supplies. The scale of the damage has placed significant pressure on local authorities as they work to provide assistance and restore affected communities.

Fast-Track Support for Urgent Humanitarian Needs

The funding will come from ADB's Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund, a mechanism designed to provide rapid financial assistance to member countries following major natural disasters. The fund focuses on life-saving support and emergency recovery efforts during the critical period after a crisis. Officials say the grant will help the FSM Government address immediate priorities in the hardest-hit areas, including humanitarian assistance and recovery activities aimed at supporting vulnerable households. ADB has also indicated its willingness to provide further assistance if required as recovery efforts continue.

For many communities in Chuuk and Yap, the funding represents an important source of support as they begin the long process of rebuilding homes, restoring services and recovering from one of the most damaging weather events to affect the country this year.
