Tensions Rise as U.S. Targets Indian-crewed Tankers in Omani Waters

Amid heightened tensions, a U.S. strike targeted the Jalveer tanker off Oman, involving Indian crew members, as part of wider efforts to enforce a blockade on Iran-related shipping. This incident follows similar actions against other Indian-crewed vessels, resulting in casualties and raising concerns over maritime security in the region.

Tensions escalated Thursday when the Jalveer, an Indian-crewed tanker, came under suspected U.S. strike off Oman, marking a series of similar incidents this week. All 20 Indian crew members on board were reported safe, according to India's shipping ministry.

The Jalveer, flagged under Guinea-Bissau, sent a distress signal citing a fire near its engine room. British maritime risk management firm Vanguard reported coordination with the Royal Navy of Oman for the crew's evacuation. Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the U.S. Navy's involvement, suggesting the strike was part of a broader U.S. operation to block Iranian ports.

This strike follows U.S. actions against two other Indian-crewed vessels, including the Marivex and the Settebello, the latter resulting in three Indian fatalities. A U.S.-led blockade on Iran-related maritime activities, which commenced on April 13, has intensified regional tensions, focusing on non-compliant vessels attempting to bypass sanctions.
