Mongolia-China Trade Surge Amid Economic Challenges
Mongolia plans to boost trade with China by over 10% this year, aiming for $20 billion in two-way trade despite global economic pressures. The countries agreed to strengthen ties without setting specific targets. The growth leverages China's economic expansion, promising increased Mongolian exports, notably in coal and minerals.
Mongolia is set to increase trade with China by over a tenth this year, targeting $20 billion in two-way trade, as revealed during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to Ulaanbaatar. This comes as China's demand for Mongolian coal intensifies following a mining disaster in Shanxi province.
Despite economic challenges, including the effects of the Iran war on global outlooks, Mongolia sees opportunity. If China's economy grows by 1%, Mongolia’s exports could increase by 4%, according to international estimates. The strengthening relationship underscores Mongolia's economic reliance on China, its biggest export destination.
While specifics on trade targets weren't disclosed, both nations affirmed their commitment to enhancing economic cooperation. Development projects like the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmot railway aim to improve cross-border connectivity. Meanwhile, China pledged 1 million vaccine doses to aid Mongolia in combating a livestock disease outbreak.
