Ghana's cotton industry is going to have a boost. The renowned agricultural company, RMG Ghana has planned to invest USD 10 million in the cotton industry under a five-year project. The investment will cover the supply of inputs to farmers, operational costs and marketing.
RMG Ghana's investment is expected to augment the cultivation of cotton in Ghana from the current 4,000 metric tonnes to 50,000 metric tonnes. The agro-input company has taken the decision to invest after having a partnership with Wienco Cotton with an objective to make Ghana Africa's one of the major cotton producers.
Daniel Ruegg, the Chief Executive Officer of RMG Ghana said at the relaunch of Wienco Cotton operations in Tamale that the event was to rebrand the cotton industry. According to him, the investment by RMG Ghana would help ensure the expansion of farm sizes, timely availability of production inputs for high productivity and improvement in income levels of cotton farmers, as reported by Graphic Online.
"We will pre-finance acquisition of all inputs and also sell the cotton on the international market. The white gold of Ghana, as it used to be called, must return to be the game-changer in the country's economy," he added.
On the other hand, the government of Ghana is in talks with the Xinjiang Tianye Group of China to establish Agricultural Industrialisation Parks in the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone (NSEZ) of Ghana for the commercial production of cotton and other crops.
