Mathura veterinary univ degrees go high tech

A veterinary university here will be awarding high-tech degrees to its students this year onward with their photographs printed on the document and their aadhar numbers embedded in them through a QR Code.

The novel measure will be initiated by the Uttar Pradesh Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go-Anusandhan Sansthan from its eighth convocation, to be held on August 31.

While the degrees would be carrying their holders' photographs this year onward, the document has already been carrying the QR Code having the students' aadhar numbers through since last year, said University Vice-Chancellor, KML Pathak.

The measures have been taken to prevent the misuse of the degrees and preparation of fake ones, he said.

The step of printing students' photograph on the degrees has been initiated as per the university's Chancellor, Governor Ram Naik's advise last year.

Prof Pathak talked of the novel, high-tech degrees during a press conference convened to apprise the media of the programmes of the university's upcoming convocation on August 31 during which a total of 93 degrees, including 14 Ph.D. ones would be awarded to the students.

"Governor Naik will deliver his presidential address on the occasion," Prof Pathak told media persons, adding the University Grant Commission Chairman Dhirendra Pal Singh would deliver the convocation address.

UP Minister for Animal Husbandry SP Singh Baghel would be the guest of honor on the occasion during which 15 meritorious students too would be awarded medals.

He said the university would also start a dairy college and a nursing one from its next academic session.

Prof Pathak said the university recently got a grant of Rs 32 crores from the Union government under the National Agriculture Development Scheme.

Accordingly, on the occasion of its convocation, the governor would also be laying foundation stones for a laboratory, a state-of-the-art operation theatre and physiology lab at the university campus.

Abbreviated as DUVASU, the university describes itself as "the first of its kind in the state and fourth in the country."

Originally set up in 1947 as the UP College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, it was upgraded as a university in 2001.

The erstwhile veterinary college was the first one in Asia to confer degrees in veterinary science.

As per its official website, the university gel with its surrounding environment of Brij, "known since time immemorial for Lord Krishna and its animal wealth, particularly cows, with large numbers of 'gaushalas' (cow sheds) in and around Mathura having hundreds and thousands of cows."

Prof Pathak said the efforts are on to convert the university into a central one.
