The Congress has lashed out at the Centre over a plan to teach 'Manusmriti' to Delhi University's LLB students, alleging it forms part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'salami tactics' to fulfill the RSS's long-standing aim of undermining the Constitution.
Congress's Scheduled Caste department has called for protests against the proposed move at both state and district levels. The controversial proposal is set to be discussed during a meeting of Delhi University's Academic Council on Friday.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the proposal, calling it an assault on Dr. Ambedkar's legacy. He quoted an RSS mouthpiece expressing discontent over the current Constitution's lack of traditional Bharatiya laws.
In reaction, Congress SC department chairman Rajesh Lilothia urged for protests at university campuses to counter what he described as a 'regressive step' by the Central University. The Faculty of Law has sought approval to revise its syllabus to include readings from 'Manusmriti', which has sparked further objections from academic circles.
The Left-leaning Social Democratic Teachers Front has also voiced opposition, arguing the text promotes a 'regressive' stance on women's and marginalized communities' rights.
