Sunil Kumar, 30, has devoted the last nine years to securing a job in the Indian government. Crowded in makeshift classrooms with minimal lighting and ventilation, Kumar has prepared for numerous exams, including the prestigious civil services exam required for federal bureaucrat positions, as well as provincial services and lower-level government roles.

Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, remains undeterred by his 13 failed attempts and aims to continue his pursuit until he turns 32, the age limit for the civil services exam. 'There is more security in government jobs,' Kumar stated. 'If it happens in 2-3 years, the struggle of 10 years will be worth it.'

Between 2014 and 2022, 220 million people applied for federal jobs, with only 722,000 securing positions. This underscores the significant cultural and economic anxieties in India, where government employment is seen as more secure amid uncertain private sector opportunities. Despite the booming economy, many Indians chase government jobs for stability, pensions, health benefits, and housing.
