A recent review by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled significant issues plaguing Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs). Key problems identified include a shortage of teachers and career counselors, inadequate funding for mess management, and insufficient training for staff.
The review of 254 operational KGBVs indicated a stark disparity in meeting infrastructure norms across various states. Despite an increase in fund allocations from Rs 3,02,212.02 lakhs in 2018-19 to Rs 4,08,519.02 lakhs in 2019-20, the report noted a significant decline in fund utilization during the COVID-19 period.
Safety and security also emerged as major concerns, with many KGBVs situated in isolated areas. The report highlighted insufficient boundary walls, poor lighting, and a lack of proper safety measures, revealing that urgent attention is needed to address these issues. Additionally, administrative challenges such as contractual teaching staff and inconsistent salaries were noted.
