Himachal Pradesh is set for a major educational overhaul as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveiled plans to enhance quality in the state's schools. Announced at the annual function of Rajiv Gandhi Government College in Shimla, the government aims to close institutions with low enrollment and substandard levels, redirecting students to nearby functioning institutions.
The initiative will increase seats at these schools, with the government footing commuting expenses for displaced learners. Sukhu emphasized that new co-educational policies would be implemented in senior secondary schools to promote quality. The administration will also roll out Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools with state-of-the-art facilities like swimming pools and indoor stadiums.
Criticizing the previous BJP government for opening educational institutions for electoral gains, Sukhu reiterated the state’s commitment to educational reforms. A single directorate will oversee education from nursery to higher secondary levels. Additionally, postgraduate courses will soon debut at the college, with plans for a central heating system installation.
