Delhi High Court Acts Against School Fees for EWS Students

The Delhi High Court has instructed the capital's government to address allegations that schools are improperly charging fees to economically weaker section (EWS) students. Despite prior complaints to the Department of Education (DoE), no action was taken. The court mandates a detailed representation be submitted within four weeks, with the DoE required to respond within ten weeks.

The Delhi High Court has taken a significant step to protect economically weaker section (EWS) students in the capital against unauthorized school fees. On Wednesday, the court directed the government to examine allegations that schools are charging students in violation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

Headed by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, the bench addressed the public interest litigation (PIL) which urged the Department of Education (DoE) to act on these breaches. Despite earlier complaints, no resolution had been achieved, prompting the court's intervention.

The court has instructed the petitioners to submit a comprehensive representation to the DoE within four weeks. In addition, the DoE is obligated to address the issues raised in the representation within ten weeks to ensure compliance with educational laws.
